After some angry debugging earlier this week, the latest libnetcdf packages on conda-forge can open netCDF files *directly over HTTP*, such as the GOES-16/17 archives on AWS S3. No manual downloading necessary, even works with XArray. Just add "#mode=bytes" to the end of URL: https://t.co/LgAdBzarK6
